"We can now envisage a time when a simple approach can be used to produce stem cells that are able to form any tissue from a small sample taken from any of us," said Ian Wilmut of the University of Edinburgh, who helped clone the first mammal, Dolly the sheep, in 1997."
O impacto ético, político e social desta investigação é notável, muitos dos dilemas que são recentemente discutidos começam a desvanecer à medida que pesquisas como estas assumem forma. Surge assim, a par e passo, a medicina regenerativa, tornando possível a recodificação de células de órgãos do próprio organismo, com o objectivo de se “auto-repararem”.
Por enquanto, esta técnica poderá ser usada para aprofundar o conhecimento relativamente a doenças e efeitos de fármacos, já o tratamento de patologias é um objectivo considerado a longo prazo:
